  1. I learned today that maybe the children of maycomb dont want to be mean and rude on purpose, its maybe the parents fault of teaching their kids that influence on them. Also, I didn't agree when someone said that mrs. dubose was innocent. She is not innocent because first off, she's an old lady who shouldn't be calling little girls ugly and tell them what to do in a harsh voice. I think that she could be nicer, but I disagree on her being innocent. All in all, I really like the book so far, it's interesting and I understand it well.

  2. During the discussion, I learned how many different things Atticus meant when he said "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird.". It can be connected to his representation of Tom Robinson, the teasing of Boo Radley, or even their treatment of Mrs. Dubose.

I agreed with what Alex said during the discussion when she said that Atticus was a very non-traditional person and he lives life and has views very different from most people in Maycomb.

I am enjoying how this is a better book than Of Mice and Men and how it seems to have a lot of meaning beyond the actual context of the book.

  3. In the discussion I learned more about how Atticus is a good father to Jem and Scout. I agree with the people who said that Atticus is a good father because he teaches them the way they should respond to people like Mrs. Dubose. I'm enjoying the book because I don't know what's going to happen next. For example, in chapter 11 when Mrs. Dubose died I didn't expect that to happen.

  4. One thing that I learned from this discussion is that although everyone ideas are controversial and may conflict, by allowing everyone to share what they took out of part one of the book, new ideas and connections can be made with others from this. One thing that someone said was that Maycomb lacked a lot of diversity, and culture. Everyone was just "living" and nothing new was really happening. I agree with this statement because almost all of the town shares the same ideas about race for example, thus lacking diversity in their views. I enjoy the book because it is very interesting to be able to see the world from Scouts point of view, not only because of her personality but also because of how she views her father, and brother Jem.

  5. I learned that Atticus really does have a point behind all of his parenting. He really teaches the kids that they must have respect for Mrs. Dubose even though she said bad things about them. He knows that what she said was wrong, but decides to be above it. I did not agree with the comment that Scout would be different if raised by Mrs. Alexandra, because she is set in her ways already and is to stubborn to change. I am enjoying Atticus's interactions with the children. I think the amount we are suppose to read nightly is very difficult. I am really enjoying reading the book

  6. One thing I learned from the discussion is that theres always other point of views of the same topic and you should always listen to other peoples point of view because it can help you understand the book better. One thing someone said that I agree with is that Atticus is very un-traditional in many ways with how he is raising his kids. Something I personally noticed from part one is that a lot of the same ideas are used throughout many situations and those ideas help you get to know the characters better

  7. I think the discussion helped us see our peers point of view on the book, and helped us better understand the book. Hearing other's point of view always helps me, and one thing I learned was that the "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird" phrase can apply to Boo Radley; I always thought it applied only to Tom Robinson. Lots of people said that Scout would be much different if she were raised by aunt Alexandra, and I agree with this strongly. As for the book itself, I read it last year already in English, and reading it a second time lets me see things I might have missed.

  8. One thing I learned from this discussion was new points of view on certain topics. Specifically on the topic about how Scout would be if she was raised by Aunt Alexandra. People brought up interesting points about her views and how scout would be if she was her mom. I agreed with most people and their comments about Boo Radley and how he is kind of like the mocking bird. They were saying stuff about he is innocent and the kids made a game out of him and the quote "its a sin to kill a mockingbird" was brought up when talking about Boo as well. He is kind of like the mocking bird because he doesnt do anything to harm anyone he is kind of just there, and the kids get amusement out of harassing him in a way. Im feeling fine about the book so far, its pretty good. I already know what happens because we had to read the book last year, but its good a 2nd time to. Reading it a 2nd time has given me more insight on the book itself, the characters and just about everything else. The discussions are good and provide more information to. I have learned a lot more about the times back then and what they were like to, how people acted and all that stuff Overall the book is pretty good and I hope that I can learn as much from part 2 as I have from part 1

  9. From this disscussion, I learned that if Jem and Scout had come from a different background, like Aunt Alexandria, they would not have the same values as they do with Atticus. They would probably not like Black people and they would not have Atticus's constant influence that they do now. I agree with Sunny about how the "kill a mockingbird" quote also meant that you shouldn't hurt anything or anyone that is innocent and brings joy to people like a mockingbird. So far, the book is goo and I like it. It seems interesting, even though I have read it before.

  10. During this class discussion I learned that there are people with different perspectives that can disagree on what you have to say about. Tricia said that Atticus actions mattered and not his words. Atticus actions showed that he was a good father, and not people saying that, I agree with Tricia. I enjoy challening myself with the quizzes because there was so many characters. One thing I find difficult about this book is keeping up with character descriptions because there are so many.

  11. During the discussion we discussed many important things. I realized that it is very helpful to have these types of discussions because hearing other peoples views on parts in the book is really helpful to understand more. I agreed with Alex when she said that Atticus didn't want Scout and Jem to talk about his good shot at school. Jem says that if Atticus wanted them to know about it, he would have told them. Atticus didn't tell them before, therefore he probably did not want them to know, or to talk about it in school. Atticus probably didn't want to be known for being couragous for having a "good shot". He wanted to be courageous for doing something that no one else in the town would have the courage to do, defend Tom. I am enjoying this book because it is actually teaching lessons that people would find helpful.

  12. after the discussion, I felt like I understood different people perspectives. I agree with Reggie that if a person is calling you names and you fight back, you might make the situation worse and that person might be even more angry. But sometimes if you fight back you might not change their point of view, but you could quiet them down. I enjoy how the book foreshadow sand how Atticus teaches Jem and Scout

  13. One thing I learned from the discussion is that Boo Radley relates to a mockingbird. When Atticus says "it is a sin to kill a mockingbird", he means to not destroy the things that make us happy since all mockingbirds do is sing for us and provide happy songs when we're feeling down. They are also such innocent creatures, and it would be wrong to kill them. Boo is this mockingbird because he is innocent, and though they may not know it yet, he may actually provide them with happiness as well for all he does is care for the kids and treats them very kindly. I am enjoying the book because it gives many life lessons that I did not notice when I had first read the book.

  14. During the class discussion, I learned many new things. One of the new things that stood out to me the most was that, Atticus was always good at shooting. I thought that Atticus was just a naturally good shooter, because Atticus never really mentions that he is a good hunter. During the discussion, I agreed with Alex, when she said that kids in Maycomb are spreading rumors around about things that they don't even understand. They're spreading rumors about how Atticus is a "nigger-lover" just because he's supporting Tom, as his lawyer. This relates to Of Mice and Men, when Lennie doesn't understand why Crooks isn't allowed to go into the city with the other guys on the farm. I like the book better than Of Mice and Men, but I dont like how Jem and Scout go through the same schedule everyday, because its kind of boring and you know what is going to happen.

  15. I learned different views people had on their opinion of Atticus, Jem, and Scout. I agreed with what one person said about scout being so stuck on her "ways" and that it would be very difficult to be raised from this point on in a different enviormnt, without Atticus, with people with compleatly different views and beleifs that Atticus had taught them. I enjoy the great amount of detail they add about a charecter and make unexpected turns like boo being " not so bad".

  16. I learned that the mockingbird symbolizes Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. I agree with Sunny when she said "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent singers who don't ever bother you or make nests in unwanted places. They don't do anything wrong, so it would be a sin to kill something so innocent. I like all the different emotions and perspectives you see throughout the book. But I find the way they talk, kind of difficult. For example, "I ought to sen' ya down to the wanderin' willow" (not an actualy quote) but just the way the speakers skip a few letters just makes it harder to read. Other reflections I had was that Scout would have a different personality if Aunt Alexandria raised her

  17. One thing I learned about the discussion that I didn't realize before is that Atticus is someone who is non-traditional. He does things differently from the start of when he left his family land and how he doesn't really go with what the town says and basically goes against tradition in a good way. One thing that someone said that I agree with is that Atticus isn't arrogant. He doesn't take pride in stuff that others people think he should take pride in and he's very modest about what he does. He wants to do the right thing despite what others might think. Something about the book that I enjoy is how Atticus is different from everyone else in town and isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. It's an admirable trait that everyone wants and he's full of life lessons that I haven't considered before. Something about the book that I find difficult is that how close-minded the people in the town are. They don't consider that it's possible to think another way to do the right thing. Overall, the book is really good and brings up stuff I haven't even thought of before.

  18. One thing I learned from the discussion was how other people understood the text rather than how I did. I got to see and hear a different interpretation of the text from each person, so I learned things that I would did not originally think of such as the metaphor made between Boo Radley and a mockingbird. To kill a mockingbird is a sin and people connected the mockingbird to Boo Radley while I made a completely different connection. So I learned a connection that I did not know before. Something I agree with from the discussion is that Atticus is a good father. This comment emerged itself several times throughout conversation due to the fact that Atticus's actions reflect that of a good father: teaching equality, life lessons, and the difficult quality of being understanding are examples of how Atticus shares his past experiences with his children to raise them to be respectful adults. I think the author does a great job of incorporating valuable lessons within the book so that is why I find the book so enjoyable and inciteful to read. Also reading from the author's writing in first person makes the book much more interesting because information not usually expressed can be taken out of the book just from what the point of view is.

  19. One thing that I learned from the class discussion was that I didn't realize that Atticus was very humble. When someone said that, I had an epiphany because when I was thinking for words to describe him I was missing that word. It describes his thought process. I agree with what Reggie said. I felt that it was very insightful and added a new perspective to the conversation. The connection between Boo Radley and the children came up in the discussion several times. I learned that the mockingbird was a symbol of hope and sin in some sense. I enjoy how the book encompasses a bigger topic, such as racism. The plot is detailed and each chapter includes a new point of view. This adds depth to the valuable lessons learned from Sunny when she says "It is a sin to kill a mockingbird."
